Who would have thought that these cars would be so tricky to find twenty years later. We just took these things for granted. We still to this day look after a few C2 2.5s and 2.7s but rarely have an example offered to us for sale. When we do they are often just too tired, high mileage, patchy history, rusty or too heavily modified for us to put our name to. This makes an excellent unmolested C2 2.7 in this condition even more exciting. Driving her was a fantastic trip back in time.

This particular C2 2.7 was built to an incredibly high specification and supplied new by L & C BMW on 20th August 1989. The car comes with all the original handbooks, manuals, wallet and a fully stamped service book. The service history is 100% complete and was last serviced by BMW Coppers at 90,000 miles in September 2012. The car even comes with the original L & C Alpina C2 pricelist and specification sheets.

The Alpina C2 2.7 was only available from two UK dealers at this time. Sytner of Nottingham or L & C BMW of Tunbridge Wells. It was possible to buy the more modest C2 2.5 conversion with 190bhp for £3,995 plus VAT or for the customer craving even higher performance the C 2 2.7 litre conversion was available for a staggering £8,645 plus VAT, an amazing amount of money in 1989. The full 2.7 conversion included a 2693cc engine conversion taking it to 210 BHP at 5800 rpm with 213 lb ft of torque, Alpina mapped Bosch Motronic ignition and injection, full Alpina exhaust system, Alpina valved Bilstein shocks with Alpina progressive rate springs, Alpina 7×16” front wheels with 205/55/16 tyres and Alpina 8×16” rear wheels with 225/45/16 tyres, Alpina front spoiler, Alpina rear spoiler, Alpina side skirts, Alpina and C2 2.7 badges, Alpina gear knob, Alpina steering wheel and Alpina numbered dash plaque.

The performance was an outstanding 143 MPH top speed and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. Many purists consider the C 2 2.7 to be the ultimate road going E30, still featuring the lovely M20 straight six engine and mixed with Alpina’s subtle blend of performance motoring for the true sporting enthusiast but with that lovely Alpina usability.

Recently the car has had new brake discs and pads all round, new brake fluid, new windscreen, new front indicator lenses, new cambelt and pulley, new front wishbones, new front roll bar dive links, new bonnet sound deadening, oil service, new badges all round and new bumper trims.

The car will pass through our workshop for the normal Classic Heroes high level of preparation before being handed over to the new owner fully PDI’s and with a new MOT.

Specification

Alpina C2 2.7

Built 20/7/1989

93,000 Miles

Full BMW main agent service history from new

6 previous owners

2 Door

Plaque number 8182

Switchable Sport Auto 4 Speed box

Royal Blue Metallic

Natural leather

Limited slip differential

Central locking

Electric sunroof

Green top tint windscreen

Rear centre arm rest

Electric windows

Headlight wash wipe

Intensive wash wipe

BMW Sports front seats

Rear headrests

On-Board Computer

Scorpion category 1 Thatcham approved alarm

New speakers and Alpine head unit with Bluetooth, USB and iPod connections

Rear blind

Air conditioning

Power Steering

First aid kit

Warning triangle

Classic Heros
89 New Bond Street
London, W1S 1DA

for sale silverstone auctions 5/2014
94156miles, £12000 -15000 estimate
Registration: G88 OKP
Chassis Number: WBAAA22020AE69367
Engine Number: 21914643
Number of cylinders: 6
CC: 2695
Year of Manufacture: 1989
Estimate (£): 12,000 – 15,000
The E30 BMW will forever be a symbol of the 80s, and everyone who was anyone was driving around in a 3 series BMW, it did everything right. It was great to drive and it was beautifully built, however for a chosen few who knew their cars, the Alpina variant was the car to have. You could argue that the options and mods weren’t worth the £27000 price tag when new. Yet that misses the point, people bought an Alpina for the bespoke nature of the package, it’s still linked intrinsically with the BMW DNA yet to a few it’s even better.
Inside, the instrumentation, four spoke leather steering wheel, production plaque all attest to the owners taste and decency in choosing a model above the norm, this is a Q car of uncommon ability with mere mortal looks. The changes over a 325i Sport involved a change of crank on a 525 eta engine block to 81mm. Alpina reworked the cylinder head with larger valves and Mahle pistons and raised the compression from 9.7:1 to 10.2:1. Firmer suspension was added and geometry reconfigured to allow for the larger 16′ alloys. The whole package works to because of the attention to detail; this car has a silken wallop that has to be driven to be believed.
Finished in Royal Blue Metallic with contrasting natural leather Recaro interior Alpina build number 8182 looks absolutely stunning. The vendor informs us that the gloss of its paintwork is deep, and its shut lines are reassuringly symmetrical and narrow and almost flawless throughout, less some minor stone chips. All of the de-chromed trim is in superb condition throughout, with no pitting or corrosion to be found anywhere and gives a beautiful shine against the rest of the car.
Inside, the E30 cabin is small but perfectly formed, dashboard ergonomics are brilliant and the vendor reports the dash to be free from cracks, all electrics are reported to work perfectly and all gauges show nominal readings. The Recaro seats are in superb order and offer superb excellent support on short and long journeys alike. It is reported that this car is a sensation to drive with the lusty straight six providing all the right noises with a torque rich mid-range, the auto box is reported to work beautifully and kick down gives superb acceleration accompanied by a determined rasping growl.
The original dealer hand pack is complete and has a service book with 23 stamps, reassuringly G88 OKP has been the subject of £3700.00 worth of recent expenditure with independent Classic BMW Dealer, ‘Classic Heroes’ and is offered with a full MOT and a warranted mileage of 94156 and as such offers complete peace of mind for its next lucky owner.
The biggest problem with classic Alpinas is finding one, RHD cars are particularly thin on the ground and have a fiercely loyal cognoscenti, this particular C2 makes a fine choice for fun, investment and ease of ownership.

Still registered 11/2016

featured by owner Taryn James on fastsaloons.com 1/2017:
“Car is in superb condition (not quite concours) and get’s regular use”

for sale classicheroes.co.uk 93000miles, £16950 Back in the 1990’s we enjoyed looking after many Alpina C2 2.7s in all their body designs reasonably often and looked after many.
